Needle Plate and Feed Dog Guide: Interlock and Flatlock

Note on names: in India, “4-thread” and “5-thread interlock” usually mean the overlock machine, while “flatbed interlock” means the flatlock machine. So we use the shop names below.

Needle Plate and Feed Dog Chart: 4-Thread Interlock (Overlock)

Most 4-thread machines use a 2×4 gauge, which means two needles 2 mm apart and a 4 mm stitch width.

5-Thread Interlock Needle Plate and Feed Dog Chart

A 5-thread machine sews a chain stitch and an overlock together, so its plate has an extra slot. As a result, 4-thread and 5-thread plates never swap. Also, check the version code: Pegasus EX3216-02 and EX3216-03 use different plates.

Flatlock Needle Plate and Feed Dog Chart (Flatbed Interlock)

Flatlock plates depend on needle count and gauge. For example, 3×5.6 means three needles spread over 5.6 mm, which is the usual T-shirt setting. Also, Pegasus puts the gauge in the part number: B56 = 5.6 mm, B64 = 6.4 mm, B40 = 4.0 mm.

How to Read Gauge Numbers

• 0×4: single needle, 4 mm width (3-thread overlock).
• 2×4: two needles 2 mm apart, 4 mm width (4-thread overlock).
• 3×4, 3×5, 5×5: gap between the chain needle and the overlock needle, then the overlock width (5-thread).
• 3×5.6, 3×6.4: three needles spread over 5.6 or 6.4 mm (flatlock).
• R40, B56: the gauge inside a Pegasus part number (4.0 mm, 5.6 mm).

In short, the needle plate, feed dog, presser foot and needle clamp must all share one gauge. Otherwise, the needle can hit the plate and break.

How to Find Your Part Number

1. Read the machine label. First, note the full model code, like E4S-4-M03/333, 747-514M2-24 or W562-01CB. The last part shows the version and gauge.
2. Read the old plate. Next, remove the plate. Most genuine plates have the number stamped underneath.
3. Match it in the chart. Then find the number in either column. Where a row shows “=”, both numbers are the same part.
4. Count and measure. Finally, if the number is worn off, count the needle holes and measure across them.

Signs Your Needle Plate or Feed Dog Needs Replacing

• Fabric does not move evenly, or it stops at thick seams
• Puckering or stretched seams, even after a tension check
• The needle hits the plate, or you see shiny nicks around the needle hole
• Thread breaks at the plate, because the slot has become rough
• Feed dog teeth feel flat when you run a fingernail over them

Needle Plate and Feed Dog FAQ

Which needle plate fits the Siruba 747?

The standard Siruba 747 uses the E809 plate with the H445 / D575 feed dog set. However, the 747K uses E229 with H204 / D210.

Are JACK E4 and Pegasus EX needle plates the same?

Yes. JACK 121215004 is the same 2×4 plate as Pegasus 277505R40. Also, JACK 20715008 is the same 5-thread plate as Pegasus 277517R40.

Which needle plate fits the JACK W4 flatlock?

For the standard W4 (01GB), use JACK 30115067, which is the same as Pegasus 257018B56 (3×5.6). For 6.4 mm, the JACK number is 30115068.

Which plate fits the Siruba 757 5-thread?

The common 3×5 version uses E982 with the H497 / D581 feed dog. Meanwhile, 5×5 uses E986 and 5×6 uses E868.

Can I use a 4-thread needle plate on a 5-thread machine?

No. Because a 5-thread plate has an extra slot for the chain needle, the slots and gauge are different.
