Written by Aashu, owner of Stitch Partner. These S-7200C error codes are the faults Brother industrial customers ask us about most, because we have supplied control boxes, motors and sensors to tailors and garment units since 1989.

Short answer: On a Brother S-7200C, S-7220C or S-7300A, an error code starting with E05x or E09x is usually a tilted head, or a loose treadle or panel plug. E13x and E71x point to the motor, its connector or the control box. If the panel flashes GrEASEUP, the machine needs grease, and ignoring it leads to E100. First switch off, reseat every plug, free the handwheel by hand, then switch on again. If the same code returns, use the tables below.

Most S-7200C faults come down to four parts. Match your code here first, then read the detailed table further down before you buy anything.

Before you fix Brother S-7200C error codes

Switch off and unplug the machine, then wait a few minutes before touching the control box, because it stores power. Turn the handwheel by hand: if it is stiff, the fault is mechanical (thread jam or dry parts), not electrical.

For every code, work in the same order. Note the exact code on the panel, reseat the plug named in the table, then restart. If the same code returns, do not keep restarting, because repeated faults can damage the box. Check the motor cable and the supply voltage next, and replace a part only when the plug, cable and supply are all proven good.

Brother S-7200C grease alarm: GrEASEUP and E100

If GrEASEUP flashes and the buzzer sounds when you switch on, the machine needs grease and will not sew until you act. Pressing RESET lets you carry on for now. If you keep sewing without greasing, E100 appears after a while and the machine is stopped for safety, so grease it and reset the counter.

Use Brother’s grease unit (SA8837-001) on the slide block guide as the manual shows, and wipe off any extra. Then reset the grease counter: hold the two keys at the right end of the panel while you switch on, wait for “GuCt xxx” to show, hold RESET for 2 seconds until it shows “GuCt 0”, then press ENTER. If you only reset without greasing, problems can follow.

Panel, memory and detector codes

E410 is a panel communication error, so reseat the 12-pin panel plug (P7). E440 and E441 are main board write and read errors, so the control box needs replacing. E442 (corrupted main board data) and E453 (abnormal head detector counting data) reset themselves, so just switch off and on. The head detector codes differ: E450 means the model setting could not be read from the detector, so check that the detector is the right one; E451 means writing to the detector failed, so replace it; and E452 is a connection error, so check its 6-pin plug (P8).

Power and overcurrent codes

CodeMeaningWhat to do
E701Abnormally high supply voltageCheck the supply matches the control box voltage rating and fit a stabiliser; replace the control box if the supply is normal
E705Abnormally low supply voltageCheck the supply and stabiliser; replace the control box if the supply is normal
E709Power-on check could not be completedCheck that the drive board plug is seated in P3 on the main board, switch off and on, then replace the control box
E710Motor overcurrentCheck the drive board plugs at P3 and P4 on the main board, turn the pulley by hand, then replace the motor, then the control box
E711Feed motor overcurrent (S-7300A only; not in the S-7200C or S-7220C manuals)Check the motor plug and stiff pulley; then motor or control box
E791Overcurrent in a solenoid (thread trimming, thread wiping, quick reverse or presser lifter)Check the solenoid resistances; replace the control box if they are normal
E901Diagnostic mode (DIP switch 4 ON)Set DIP switch 4 OFF

The same code can be worded slightly differently between the S-7200C, S-7220C and S-7300A manuals, so always match it against your own machine. See the official Brother S-7220C instruction manual.

Repair or replace?

Reseating a plug costs nothing, so try that first. If E131, E132 or E44x keeps returning after a clean restart, the motor or the control box is the likely cause, and a used part is rarely worth the risk. Find the exact part number in our Brother part books, or read servo motor problems and error codes before you buy.

Three checks save most unnecessary purchases. Test after every single fix, so you know which step worked. Treat the code as a clue, not a verdict: an overcurrent code often comes from a dry machine rather than a bad board, and a sensor code is often just a dirty sensor. And stop immediately at a burnt smell or a blown fuse, because that needs a technician, not another restart. Never open a live control box.

To prevent repeat faults, keep the machine clean and oiled, fit a stabiliser if your mains voltage swings, and never pull a cable out by the wire. Keep a note of each code and its date, because a pattern tells you more than any single fault.

Brother S-7200C error code FAQ

What does E050 mean on a Brother industrial machine?

The head was tilted back when you pressed the treadle. Return it upright and switch off and on.

Why does E131 keep coming back?

The motor signal is not reaching the control box. Check plug P6 first, and if it is fine, the motor or control box needs replacing.

What does GrEASEUP mean on a Brother S-7200C?

It is a reminder that the machine needs grease. Apply Brother’s grease, then reset the grease counter, or the machine will later stop with E100.

Is E901 a fault?

No, it only means diagnostic mode is on. Turn DIP switch 4 off.

Can a voltage problem cause error codes?

Yes. E095, E701 and E705 all relate to supply voltage, so a stabiliser helps in areas with unstable mains.

Where can I get the Brother S-7200C error list as a PDF?

The official wording is in the Brother S-7220C instruction manual. For the part numbers behind each code, use our free Brother part books.
