Steam Iron Problems and Cloth Cutting Machine Faults

Short answer: A steam iron that gives no steam or leaks is most often blocked with scale, or needs a new thermostat, pump or solenoid valve. A cloth cutting machine that cuts badly usually has a dull blade or worn sharpening stone, and one that overheats or sparks usually needs new carbon brushes. Unplug before any repair.

First, unplug the machine and let it cool. Then check the water, the cord and the settings, because many steam iron problems start there. After that, descale the iron and look for a blocked valve. However, if the fault remains, test the thermostat, pump and heating element. Finally, replace only the part that fails the test.

For boiler systems, the common faults are low water (pump or gauge failure), overpressure (safety valve failure), wet steam from poor water quality, and scale. Use soft or treated water, blow down the boiler regularly, and replace a weak safety valve, pump or level probe. Bottle (drip) irons clog the same way: a scaled drip valve or hardened tube stops the steam, and a stuck thermostat stops the heat.
