Usha, Singer, Janome Sewing Machine Problems and Fixes

Written by Aashu, owner of Stitch Partner. Sewing machine problems like thread breaking and motor faults are what tailors bring us most, and we have fixed them in our shop since 1989.

Short answer: Most Usha, Singer and Janome problems are not the machine, they are threading, a worn needle or lint. Rethread with the presser foot up, fit a fresh correct needle, clean the bobbin area, then test on scrap cloth. Note that mechanical Indian models (Usha, Singer Promise, Tradition) show no error codes, so only electronic models have them.

First, switch the machine off and remove the needle. Then rethread the machine with the presser foot up, because most sewing machine problems start with threading. After that, fit a fresh needle and clean the bobbin area. However, if the problem returns, check the tension and the bobbin case. Finally, test on scrap cloth before you sew the real garment.

Common sewing machine problems and fixes

Problem Likely causes Fix
Upper thread keeps breaking Wrong threading, tension too tight, old thread, burr on needle plate or hook, wrong needle Rethread with the foot up, lower the tension, fit new thread and needle, feel for burrs
Needle keeps breaking Bent or dull needle, pulling the fabric, sewing over pins, needle too thin Change the needle, let the feed dog move the cloth, match needle size to fabric
Bobbin thread loose or visible on top Top tension too tight, bobbin not seated, bobbin case tension Reseat the bobbin, lower the top tension, rethread
Thread loops or bird’s nest below Upper thread missed the take-up lever or tension discs Rethread fully with the foot raised
Skipped stitches Dull, bent or wrong needle, needle put in the wrong way round New correct needle, flat side to the back (check your model)
Fabric not moving Foot up, feed dog lowered, stitch length at zero, lint or thread nest Lower the foot, raise feed dog, set the length, clean
Handwheel stuck, machine jammed Thread tangled in the bobbin area Remove needle and bobbin, cut out thread, clean lint, rethread
Noisy machine Lint, dry parts, bent needle Clean, oil, change needle
Puckering or uneven tension Thread and fabric mismatch, mis-set dial Rethread, adjust the dial a little at a time

Motor and foot pedal sewing machine problems

If the motor does not run at all, check the power cord and pedal plug first, then spin the handwheel to make sure nothing has seized. If it hums but will not turn, the usual suspects are worn carbon brushes, a loose or slipping belt, or a seized bearing. We stock motors for Usha, Janome, Singer and Brother and a Usha Janome hand wheel. For thread breaking on Usha Janome specifically, also check the bobbin case.

Brother home machine error codes

Meanings vary a little between model families, so confirm in your manual. E1: motor locked, usually tangled thread. E2: start or reverse pressed with the presser foot up. E3: controls used while the bobbin winder is engaged. E4: start pressed while the foot controller is connected. E5 and E6: buttonhole lever and stitch mismatch. F1: main motor not rotating, check wiring, then the power or main board.

To prevent these problems, first change the needle regularly. Also, clean the bobbin area, because lint causes jams. In addition, oil the machine as the manual describes. Moreover, use good thread, since cheap thread breaks often. Therefore, a few minutes of care each week saves costly repairs. Finally, cover the machine after use, so dust stays out.

However, some faults need a technician. For example, a burnt smell or a motor that stays silent means you should stop at once. Similarly, a jammed handwheel that will not free up points to a damaged part. Because of this, do not force the machine. Instead, send us the model number and a photo on WhatsApp. Then we can suggest the right part quickly.

FAQ

Does an Usha sewing machine show error codes? Mechanical Usha models do not, because only computerised models show codes.

Why does my thread break again and again? First, check the threading. Then check the tension, an old needle and finally a burr.
